Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, returns to nineteenth century London, seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs Lovett, the resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop above which he opens a new barber shop.
Mrs Lovett luck sharply shifts when Todd’s thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up and the carnage has only just begun.
The cast for Sweeney Todd was amazing. Anthony Warlow as Sweeney Todd, Gina Riley Mrs Lovett, Debra Byrne as Beggar Woman, Michael Flazon as Adolfo Pirelli, Daniel Sumegi as Judge Turpin, Anton Berezin as Beadle Bamford, Genevieve Kingsford as Johanna, Jonathan Hickey as Tobias Ragg and Owen McCredie as Anthony Hope. The ensemble is made up of Carrie Barr, Darcy Carroll, Amelia Christo, Benjamin Colley, Andrew Dunne, Nick Eynaud, Courtney Glass, Matt Heyward, Lauren Jimmieson, Megan Kozak, Sam Roberts-Smith, Samuel Skuthorp, Tod Strike, Caroline Vercoe and Susan-Ann Walker.
Anthony Warlow and Gina Riley seemed to have a little bit of chemistry but I did see it after they had performed a few shows. The rest of the cast were great and I hadn’t seen some of them perform before.
The set was well done for the amount of space they had for the stage. With the orchestra being on stage it made for a concise set that could be quickly changed as the scene needed. Kim Bishop did amazing job with the costumes.
Overall I enjoyed Sweeney Todd and would see it again. Anthony Warlow did an amazing job as Sweeney.
