Based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, War Horse features a 34 strong cast and more than 20 puppets. It is the most successful play in the National Theatre’s history, has won more than 25 international awards and has now been seen by over 8 million people worldwide, in 98 cities and across 12 countries.
A remarkable story of courage, loyalty and friendship, it tells the story of a young boy called Albert and his horse Joey, set against the backdrop of the First World War. This is a powerfully moving and imaginative drama is a show of phenomenal inventiveness, filled with stirring music and songs, featuring ground-breaking puppetry work by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, which brings breathing, galloping horses to life on stage.
When War Horse was announced I knew I had to go see it as I absolutely loved the film and boy the play didn’t disappoint.
The amazing cast are: Rebecca Killick, Kofi Aidoo-Appiah, Rianna Ash, Matthew Booth, Jo Castleton, Jonathan Cobb, Colin Connor, Ben Cutler, Khalid Daley, Zoe Halliday, Karl Haynes, Danny Hnedrix, Alex Hooper, Lewis Howard, William Ilkley, Andrew Keay, Clive Keene, Natalie Kimmerling, Kiran Landa, Tom Larkin, Michael Jean-Marain, Mark Matthews, Katherine Moraz, Ben Murray, Scott Miller, Christopher Naylor, Samuel Parker, Tom Quinn, Gareth Radcliffe, Domonic Ramsden, Jack Simpson, Tom Stacy, Elizabeth Stretton, Kenton Thomas, Charlie Tighe and Matthew Trevannion.
The entire cast made you connect with the story and the way the puppeteers controlled the horses made you connect with the horses as if they were real.
The set was minimalistic in the sense of actual set pieces as the puppeteers brought it to life with the horses and the goose. The set was perfect and seamless as it transitioned into the different locations throughout the show.
The costumes were period correct and the puppeteers were in the same colour outfits as the horses they were controlling/
Overall I loved War Horse and would definitely see the show again!
